Arts and culture

Get a dose of culture with the latest exhibitions on in the Valley’s galleries and spaces. In October, Art from the Margins Studio & Gallery will showcase finalists’ work from the 2020 AFTM Queensland Outsider Art Awards, while IMA hosts The Churchie until 2 January. Visit Jan Murphy Gallery to view the Stay warm, be cool exhibition by Lucy Culliton and peruse the works of Steve Lopes at Mitchell Fine Art – both showing in October.

Prefer a walking art tour? Check out the Brisbane Open House Tour – Forgotten Type: Fortitude Valley, which highlights the ‘ghost signs’ in the area.

For hands-on craft, get along to Helena Rose’s Beaded Fascinator Workshop, or her popular Flower Crown Making Workshop in October. You can also get your stitch and bitch on at one of Alice Nightingale’s fortnightly Wednesday night or Saturday morning Social Sewing Classes.

Music and comedy

Don’t miss out when singer-songwriter Josh Pyke takes to the Black Bear Lodge stage on 1 October. STUMPS will also tour in October, visiting Barbara on 2 October. Other upcoming gigs include Yorke and Hope D at Black Bear Lodge, Selfish Sons at Phase 4 Records & Cassettes and Methyl Ethyl at The Outpost Bar, to name a few.

Tuesdays are Rnb Jam nights at Press Club, while Blute’s Trivia is back on every Thursday. Want a laugh? The Outpost Comedy series is a free monthly event showcasing Queensland’s best comics. Bombshell Burlesque is also on at The Outpost Bar (11 October), while Cloudland has all the dance moves for the Australasian Samba King & Queen Competition (16 October). The Outpost Bar limbers up for more cabaret action with To Live Deliciously on 15 October.

Food and wine

The event synonymous with October – Oktoberfest – is on at Cloudland on 31 October, bringing the Bavarian beer hall to Brisbane. If wine is more your tipple, book a spot at Vinotopia on 9 October. Also held at Cloudland, Vinotopia is a great way to ‘wine’ away a Friday afternoon in the Valley.
