It’s that time again when we don our favourite woollen jumpers and enjoy the aromas and flavours of the winter season. Here are the top spots in the Valley to cosy up to mug-loads of your favourite winter warmer – hot chocolate. Extra marshmallows, please!
Reverends Fine Coffee & Bar began after former pastor Luke Andrews decided to enter the coffee business. We’re so glad he did. Reverends is a Valley fave, from the cafe’s simple décor and gorgeous red-brick walls to the wide range of coffee blends from around the globe. They use only the best and creamiest Maleny milk in their hot drinks, and we can guarantee you’ve never had a hot chocolate this velvety.
A tiny hole-in-the-wall with sunny outdoor seating on Winn Lane, No. 5 Cafe has a delectable selection of freshly made meals and Kiwi-themed treats with silky smooth Toby’s Estate Coffee. We can’t go past their chunky house-made cookies or sweet slices with an indulgent hot choccy to warm us on those cool winter mornings!
Cakes and Sh*t has everything we need under one roof: cakes, coffee, hot chocolate and a controversial name! The gorgeous little nook, tucked away in the appropriately named Bakery Lane, is the perfect place to sip on a toasty hot choccy. Whether you sit down or take away, we can almost guarantee you’ll leave with a cupcake or five. Your summer body can wait…
Another intimate, trendy cafe situated in the delightful Bakery Lane is The New Black. Hanging plants, eccentric wall art and a slightly unconventional all-day menu are some of the cafe’s key features, but hot drinks are their absolute specialty. The New Black serves up coffee in all shapes and sizes – French press, syphon, cold drip, V60 and nitro – but certainly knows how to keep things simple, like a humble hot chocolate.
Fine food and even finer hot drinks? Froth by name, Froth by nature has us, err, frothing over their mouth-watering array of breakfast, lunch and dinner options. Occupying an inviting spot in California Lane and anchored by Toby’s Estate Coffee on their hot drink menu, this dog-friendly cafe also does a mean hot chocolate and puppacino – if your furry friend is into that.
Rocking a brand-new Valley HQ in the TC Beirne Building, South Brisbane fan fave Only. Specialty Coffee now has a dine-in site with a tightly edited menu that showcases locally sourced ingredients. Alongside a rotating selection of coffee from single origin roasters, hot chocolate lovers can linger over a specialty cup of cocoa, too.
The Valley’s breakfast and brunch hotspot Paradise cafe has an airy, lived-in feel with an inviting menu to suit. Helmed by husband-and-wife duo Dutch and Bekky Brill, you’ll find Padre espresso, single-origin pour-over and cold brew on the coffee front and a barista-made hot chocolate, of course. Add a lil’ something from a tempting selection of pastries from Jocelyn’s Provisions and that’ll hit the sweet spot!
