It’s Record Store Day on Saturday 23 April and there’s no better spot than the Valley to show your appreciation of independent record stores and their knowledgeable staff, music lovers and recording artists of all genres than in the Valley.

What began in 2007 as a celebration of US independent record stores and the unique culture of these dedicated music hubs has been adopted internationally to champion vinyl slingers and indie labels everywhere.

Brisbane’s live music mecca, the Fortitude Valley Special Entertainment Precinct continues to hero and nurture the city’s renowned music-based entertainment industry through the support of local music venues and record stores Butter Beats and Catalog Music.

Jason Woodward started Butter Beats as Brisbane’s first specialty store for funk, soul, jazz, hip-hop and punk with just a couple of crates of records in 1998, right when vinyl was deemed out of vogue.

Butter Beats now has 20,000 records in store and a further 40,000 vinyl in storage across all genres. Jason says independent record stores act as a library resource, a meeting place for musicians and music fans and offer an alternative to mainstream music stores by championing local artists and labels.

Catalog Music co-founder and DJ Martin Spencer believes record stores like Catalog, which was also established in 2020 and stocks new and pre-loved vinyl and cassettes, are intrinsic to the fabric of a city’s artistic and cultural community.
“In many ways a city's cultural depth can be gauged by the quality of its record stores,” Martin says. “Record stores have an important role to maintain community, arts and culture in cities.”

Show your support and turn it up in the Valley for a free five-hour jam fest when Record Store Day festivities take over Brunswick Street Mall.

From 10am–3pm, DJs from the Valley’s Butter Beats, Catalog Music and QUIVR record stores will soundtrack your weekend. Local community radio station 4ZZZ will live broadcast from the Brunswick Street Mall and serve as MC on the day.
Attendees can also check out the Record Store Day markets on Brunswick Street Mall on the day to browse pop-up stalls and merch tents with vinyl and music collectables plus the Suitcase Rummage vendors with a range of vintage, pre-loved and handmade goods.
