Lights, camera, Carnival!
Continuing the Valley’s cultural burst of celebrations in 2019, an iconic Brazilian tradition is making tracks for Brunswick Street - none other than Carnival!
From 4pm on Sunday 7 July, a human wave of colour and energy will dance its way from Chinatown Mall, along Wickham Street into Brunswick Street Mall celebrating the event that Rio de Janeiro is most famous for.
Constructed by colour-coded sections known as “alas”, Carnival is loved for vibrant costumes that turn samba dancers into life-sized birds as they weave through decorated floats and bring their surroundings to life. Essentially, it’s the ultimate street party that will have you dancing from the sidelines.
Joining the front-line of this year’s Valley-based Carnival is Rio de Janeiro’s first ever Aussie ‘muse’, Mishel Finlayson, who made history headlining the iconic Carnival in Brazil this year. Our very own samba superstar is returning to home soil to take Brisbane Brazilian Carnival to the next level - and you won’t want to miss it!
Grab a caipirinha at a Brunswick Street Mall venue like Finn McCool’s, Beirne Lane, or Marquee to watch the action, and don’t think that the party’s over when the parade is… that’s not the Rio way!
After Carnival has wrapped up, samba your way over to Cloudland for the official afterparty and Australasian Samba Queen Competition from 6pm.
With a mojito in hand and a samba in your step, watching professional queens dance it out for the crown will be the ultimate way to top off your Brisbane Brazilian Carnival experience!
