The Ekka isn’t in its usual format this year, so instead we’ve been gifted with a long weekend in August. Brisbane’s People’s Day (usually a Wednesday public holiday) has moved to Friday 14 August this year, meaning we get the People’s Weekend instead. For inspo on how to spend the People’s Weekend in the Valley, we’ve got a few ideas…
Have a Valley staycation
Save on cabs and Ubers and treat yo’self to a stay in one of Fortitude Valley’s hotels and aparthotels. From self-catering apartments to street art-inspired boutique hotels, check-in and check out all the Valley has to offer from a central base.
Go on a cultural stroll
The Valley is full of gallery spaces and street art for an inspiring wander. Missing the buzzy action of the Ekka? Relive your dagwood dog-flavoured memories with Showtime, a free photographic exhibition at Art from the Margins Studio & Gallery that reflects all the colour and spectacle of the Ekka as seen by AFTM Foto Group members.
Get your game face on
If sideshow alley is your usual Ekka hang, you’ll love the good times and competitive games available at the Valley’s many arcade bars. From vintage pinball machines and darts to the latest arcade games and mini-golf, you can kidult and drink cocktails in these bars.
Fill up on comfort food
Food is such a nostalgic part of the Ekka experience. Whether you’re into strawberry sundaes or Team Dagwood Dog (or both!), many of us wait all year to indulge our Ekka food cravings. The Valley is full of options for a filling feast – from stacked burgers to cheesy slices of pizza, or pub grub in cosy spaces that warm our soul. And if you really want that dagwood dog or strawberry sundae, there’ll be drive-through pop-ups at the Brisbane Showgrounds and Bowen Hills.
Shop one-of-a-kind finds
Forget the oversized stuffed bear and generic showbags and nab yourself a unique item from one of the Valley’s artisan boutiques. You can shop an array of handmade products from beauty and jewellery to fashion and homewares in The Lanes Fortitude Valley and the independent shops along Brunswick and Wickham streets. Don’t forget the new Valley Laneway Markets on the first Saturday of every month, too.
